Friday's post, and the rest of this week's, came from the town of Charleroi, a small town on the Monongahela about an hour south of Pittsburgh. I'd never been there before, but I thought it was a nice town, and it seemed better off than a lot of other places in the region. According to Wikipedia, the area's population has declined substantially, but some industry remains in the area with a large Pyrex plant, which I'm sure has helped keep it relatively well off.

I don't think I've been there, but I do remember once a radio announcer , obviously new to the area, hesitating, then gamely pronouncing it as "sharl-rwa" , apparently not too far from North "vair sigh. " I'm too close to this, but is there a nearby municipality that has retained the native form of pronunciation of its name?
